About This Resource

This is a bundle of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) resources for small group counseling or individual counseling. The components are focused on helping students understand their feelings, manage negative thinking, develop coping skills, take the perspectives of others, and problem solve situations. Games, hands-on activities, lessons, and reinforcement plans are included.

The Helper Squad is a set of engaging characters that I developed to help elementary aged-students access the more abstract concepts that are part of CBT. The characters are presented as helpers as students learn the new skills.

Chief Emotional Officer (CEO): helps you identify how you are feeling, how strong your feelings are, and how you usually feel in certain situations.

Dr. Positive: helps you analyze automatic negative thoughts and find the evidence. She uses a step by step process to look for thought errors and makes sure you are using all the facts.

Coping Captain: helps us figure out what coping skills to use when our feelings and thoughts are overwhelming. He makes sure we are able to calm down so we can make positive choices.

Impact Inspector: helps things have gone wrong. She takes a close look at the impact of actions on you and others, and how the impact would change with different behavior.

Fantastic Fix-It: helps after a situation has gone badly and finds real ways to try to make the situation better.

What's Included?

CBT Helper Squad Game: Practice all the Helper Squad skills using age-typical scenarios.

CBT Game for Anxiety: Focused on anxiety provoking situations and using Helper Squad Skills.

CBT Game for Anger Management: Focused on anger provoking situations and using Helper Squad Skills.

Coping Skills Workbook: Helps students develop personal coping skill strategies that they can use when they are struggling with strong emotions and challenging situations.

Perspective Taking Lesson and Activities: Helps students look at others’ perspectives, the impact of their actions, and make plans for good choices.

Positive Thinking Workbook: Activities to help students challenge automatic negative thoughts and develop positive thinking habits.

How to Say Sorry - Lesson and Activities: Great for reinforcing all 5 SEL competencies.

Feelings Activities and Games: Perfect to develop emotional awareness.

I have been using these characters, the related lesson activities with two different fourth grade students who need SEL supports, and we are doing it virtually. One young man is more open to the activities and trying a variety of coping strategies, while the other is still not there yet. As an educator of students in need of SEL, this resource and related resources have been a gold mine of information for me. SOcial Emotional WOrkshop has found a great way to make some tough topics kid-friendly and manageable. This is an excellent resource! Thank you for creating and sharing.

Our school social worker brought in CBT to work with the students, and when I found this to incorporate WITH her lessons, we were able to focus what we were all looking at doing! The games helped connect with our students that don't like the talking/reading side.

Fabulous collection of resources. They are comprehensive and well put together. The scenarios relate well to kids. I love how much reflection is involved in these CBT activities, to really engage the kids in their thinking. The characters are such a great way to introduce these concepts! I know it's a small thing, but the reward charts are so cute!!! They will add a layer of interest for my kids!
