About This Resource

These counseling activities are for counselors, psychologists, and social workers working with students in grades 1-4 that need practice identifying thought errors, how to spot them, and ways to use realistic (Just Right) thinking. The workbook focuses on using a science and lab theme to make the concept more engaging and concrete to students. Students know that scientists use facts and a process to come to conclusions. This makes it simple to explain that Dr. Positive, a scientist, comes to conclusions by using evidence. Any good Just Right Thinking Scientist would make sure she had all the facts so she didn’t come to a wrong conclusion.

I used this in a social skills group with 7 and 8th graders with autism and learning disabilities. They really enjoyed the concept of the character and how it was used to determine positive thinking.

My students found this concept an easy way of grasping CBT. The activities made sense and were mostly portable to Telehealth/remote use. It has been especially loved by "little scientist" kids on the spectrum. I even show the resources to my adolescent clients to demonstrate the concepts in a "cute" way. My favourite of the Help Squad resources.
