About This Resource

For students to change cognitive distortions (thought traps, unhelpful thinking, negative thinking), they need practice examining and talking back to those negative thoughts.

These two card-based activities give students practice in engaging ways. Thoughts on Trial uses a courtroom metaphor in which students examine evidence for and against a negative thought, and Talk Back Cards provide straightforward practice for putting negative thoughts in their place. The included thought traps and strategy cards help students connect identifying unhelpful thinking patterns with taking action.

With this resource, you'll be able to:
  • Give students repeated practice in challenging negative thoughts through engaging activities.
  • Use hands-on activities that feel like games.
  • Help students connect thought traps to concrete strategies.
  • Keep activities fresh with editable card templates to create custom scenarios.

What's Included

1. Thoughts on Trial Activity: Students take on courtroom roles to put a negative thought "on trial." The prosecutor argues why the thought might be true, the defense attorney argues against it, and the jury delivers a verdict. It's a concrete way for students to practice examining evidence for and against their negative thoughts.
  • 36 scenario cards with realistic negative thoughts students face.
  • Role cards for courtroom positions (Judge, Defense Attorney, Prosecutor, Defendant, Jury).
  • Court worksheet for recording evidence and verdicts.
  • In individual counseling, the student can take on all three roles or the counselor can take one role and they can decide the verdict together.
22 pages | PDF + Editable PowerPoint | Black & white included

2. Talk Back Cards Activity: Students draw a card, read a negative thought scenario, and practice "talking back" with a more balanced response. It's quick, flexible practice that works as a warm-up, partner activity, or small group discussion..
  • 30 scenario cards with negative thought situations
  • Answer key with sample "talk back" responses
23 pages | PDF + Editable PowerPoint | Black & white included

These cards and references help students identify which thinking trap is at play and what they can do about it—bridging the gap between recognizing the problem and responding to it.
  • 15 thought traps cards with kid-friendly definitions and examples
  • 15 strategy cards with concrete coping techniques
  • Thought traps reference guide (overview of all 15 traps)
  • Classroom posters for visual reinforcement
PDF | Black & white included
