About This Resource

CBT counseling bundle for individual and small-group sessions | Grades 3-7 | 175+ pages | PDF + editable PPTX | Print in color or B&W.

This bundle teaches cognitive restructuring through the Catch-Check-Challenge-Change framework, combining three sequenced resources plus a full set of supplemental tools. Use them in order as students build skills, or pull exactly what a student needs in the moment.

What's Included

1. Thought Sort Activity: builds foundational awareness through hands-on sorting (too negative, too positive, just right).

  • 36 sorting cards, 3 bag labels, and facilitator directions
  • Editable PowerPoint with blank cards

2. Bright Thoughts Activity: students develop personalized positive self-talk.

  • 8-page minibook with 6 situation-specific prompts
  • 1-page worksheet alternative, facilitator guide, and blank page for custom situations

3. Check, Challenge, Change Worksheets: scaffolded practice evaluating, disputing, and replacing negative thoughts.

  • 8 Check worksheets, 18 Challenge worksheets, and 8 Change worksheets
  • Answer keys and teaching notes throughout

4. Supplemental Tools: cognitive-distortion and strategy supports to use across every activity.

  • Posters: Thought-Feeling-Action, Thought Trap Cycle, Catch-Check-Challenge-Change Framework, Thought Traps Characters
  • Thought Traps Guide (15 cognitive distortions with teaching guidance)
  • Thought Traps Cards (definitions and examples)
  • 27 strategy cards (checking, challenging, and changing techniques)

175+ pages total | Color and B&W versions

Why This, Why Now

You know the student who's decided they're "just bad at everything" and won't budge. Reframing starts with helping them catch that thought before they can do anything with it. Most negative-thinking resources skip that part and hand kids a worksheet, hoping the skill sticks.

This one walks them through the whole arc: build awareness first, develop real alternatives, then practice the check-challenge-change cycle until it holds. Enough variety to keep it going across a school year without repeating yourself.

It's built for a full caseload and a schedule that falls apart by 10am. Everything's print-and-go, the answer keys are done for you, and it runs the same whether you're one-on-one or wrangling a small group of five.

How It Works

  1. Start with Thought Sort: build awareness through hands-on sorting (15-20 min)
  2. Develop alternatives with Bright Thoughts: students create personalized self-talk minibooks (30 min)
  3. Practice with Check-Challenge-Change worksheets: scaffolded from checking to challenging to the full cycle (~5 min each)
  4. Reference the supplemental tools throughout: posters, cards, and guides support every activity

Ways to Use It

Small-group CBT sessions, individual counseling toolkit, Tier 2 interventions, or private-practice therapy with elementary and middle school clients.

Great for social emotional development

This is great, highly recommended. I'm wondering if you have any resources that specifically address perfectionism? This is such an issue for so many of the students at my school and I think saps a lot of the joy in learning for them.
