Use This Resource When ...

  • A student struggles with anxiety and worst-case thinking: Help them recognize catastrophizing and fortune-telling patterns, then practice using strategy cards like "What's the evidence?" and "What's more likely to happen?" to challenge anxious predictions.

  • A student’s anger flares when they take things personally: Identify personalization and mind-reading distortions when they assume everyone is against them or can read negative intent. Use strategy cards to practice considering other explanations and checking assumptions.

  • A student gives up easily or says, "I can't do anything right": Target all-or-nothing thinking and overgeneralization patterns. Practice using strategy cards that help them find the middle ground and look for exceptions to their negative rules.

  • A student struggles with friendship drama and social conflicts: mind-reading ("She hates me"), fortune-telling ("No one will ever like me"), and labeling ("I'm so weird"). Use strategy cards to reality-check social assumptions and reframe self-talk.

  • You need to teach the thinking-feeling-action connection: Use the posters to show how automatic thoughts drive emotions and behaviors, then introduce specific thought traps students might recognize in their own lives.

  • You want to display posters in your office: Keep the Thought Traps and Catch-Check-Challenge-Change posters visible so students can reference them during sessions or point to patterns they notice on their own.
